Aero-Mil range of rugged connectors

9 August 2006 Interconnection

Souriau has extended its standard aeromil ranges with new products featuring high power transmission for use in the tough airborne environments.

Today, savings on mass is a major technological trend that leads development in the civil aerospace market. This mass saving can be addressed by, for example, the use of composite materials and by reducing harness sizes by employing network communications.

One means of mass saving that was developed on the new A380 large carrier aircraft, was the partial replacement of the hydraulic power system by electrical power. This replacement succeeded not only in reducing the mass substantially (eliminating large hydraulic pumps as well as complex pipe networks through the aircraft) but also enhanced the reliability. The back up hydraulic network was completely replaced by electro-hydraulic and electro-mechanical actuators to operate flaps, slats, spoilers, thrust reverser etc.

The use of such actuators required a local source of electrical power (60 to 80 A) in zones where vibration and temperature are very severe. To address this, Souriau extended its standard aeromil range with new high power products. This range extension was done through the qualification of a new contact technology standards for the EN 2997 and MIL DTL 38999.

These connectors are now qualified to provide electrical power (80 A per contact) in temperatures of 260°C and with vibration up to 60 g maximum.
