Temperature data acquisition device is small but powerful

23 August 2006 Test & Measurement

The EL-USB-LITE is said to redefine the concept of a small, low-cost temperature datalogger. Weighing in at 8,5 g and measuring 68 x 18 x 9,4 mm the EL-USB-LITE may be small, but according to the manufacturer, delivers the essential features found on many larger, more expensive dataloggers. The EL-USB-LITE measures ambient temperatures from

-10-50°C at a sample rate of once every 30 minutes and can store over 4000 readings.

Setup and download of the datalogger is simple: plug directly into an available USB port and open the Windows software which is supplied with the datalogger. From here users can assign the logger name, set high and low alarm levels, and determine the logging start time. At any time during the logging period an integral pushbutton will prompt a bi-colour LED to indicate the alarm status.

Once the study is completed, data can be downloaded as a text file, and this can be graphed within the supplied software or exported to a spreadsheet for further analysis. The coin cell supplied with the EL-USB-LITE can be expected to provide a battery life of over one month's continuous use.

According to the manufacturer, the cost-effectiveness of this USB-based datalogger makes it ideal for applications such as monitoring the temperature of goods during shipping or where a number of loggers may be required for a study.
