PCI switches and bridges in video applications demonstrated

4 October 2006 Computer/Embedded Technology

PLX Technology demonstrated its latest PCIe devices in robust video applications at the PCI-SIG developers conference. The demonstration highlighted the performance, interoperability and versatility of the PLX ExpressLane family.

The ExpressLane PEX 8111 PCIe-to-PCI bridge and PLX's latest 16-lane PCIe switch, were combined to enable an all-inclusive demonstration of multiple simultaneous video feeds. This demonstration showed how the ExpressLane switch and bridge interoperate in a PCIe-equipped system to manage video content from separate sources and output it to multiple monitors.

Additionally, PLX demonstrated a proof-of-concept video-capture PCIe board for surveillance applications, based on the PEX 8111 and eight video decoders from Conexant. This board, which was originally a PCI-based reference design, reflects the ease with which designers can quickly migrate from PCI or build entirely new PCIe boards, said the company.

The PCI-SIG is the Special Interest Group that owns and manages PCI and PCIe specifications as open industry standards. The organisation defines and implements new industry-standard I/O specifications as the market's I/O needs evolve.

The ExpressLane devices are designed not just to provide system and board makers with PCIe interconnect solutions for new products, but also to upgrade existing designs (using conventional PCI) quickly and economically to the powerful PCIe interconnect.

The PEX 8111 is the smallest and lowest-power PCIe bridge available, and capable of both forward and reverse bridging. This allows board and system designers to easily develop new products or migrate legacy PCI designs to the PCIe architecture. The new PLX 16-lane switch used in the demonstration delivers notable PCIe switching flexibility by providing up to five completely configurable ports, on-chip non-transparent bridging for multiprocessor designs, two virtual channels, packet cut-through capability, low latency of 150 ns, and both peer-to-peer and fan-out capability.
