Programmable temperature monitor measures six remote channels

18 October 2006 Circuit & System Protection

Maxim's MAX6689 integrated circuit is a ±1°C accurate, 6-channel temperature sensor targeted towards next-generation, 65 nm process technology. It accurately measures its own temperature and the temperature of up to six external locations such as CPUs, memory, GPUs, or other heat-sensitive locations.

Available in small 20-pin QSOP and TSSOP packages, the MAX6689 allows the user to program the temperature threshold of alarm outputs. For design flexibility, these outputs can serve as an interrupt, or can be connected to a system fan or other thermal-management circuitry. The device's hardwired STBY function eliminates false alerts at startup.

The MAX6689 communicates through a SMBus interface, and operates from a 3-5,5 V supply-voltage range. It consumes 500 μA, which is reduced to only 30 μA in standby mode. The device is specified over -40 to +125°C temperature range.
