Non-contact position sensors to replace contact types for longer life

15 November 2006 Switches, Relays & Keypads

Murata's new Hall Effect design (SV21) replaces contacts in position-sensing technology. In doing so, it eliminates all the noise and wear problems that contacts bring. With 10 million cycles rotational life and up to 200° rotational angle, Murata claims the technology offers higher reliability, better performance and longer life.

Greater flexibility is provided by programmable Hall Effect ICs that offer a choice of four output characteristics; slope, offset, lower voltage limit and higher voltage limit.

The 200 degree rotation compares well with the currently used typical range of about 90 degrees. In addition, the internal temperature compensation allows operation from -25 to 85°C. Assembly is easy, being a simple socket and bush mounting.

Key specs:

* Temperature characteristics: ±4%/25°C/full scale.

* Input current: 10 mA max.

* Output voltage range: 10 V ±4% (0,5 V ±0,2 V) to 90 V ±4%

* Rotational life: linearity; ±3% full scale

* Vibration: linearity; ±3% full scale

* Shock: ±3% full scale

Applications can be found in: measuring equipment; valve actuators; agricultural instruments; construction machinery; joy-sticks etc.
