Quality solutions for standard platforms help ensure reliability

21 February 2007 Interconnection

Even the best standards are of little use if interfaces differ in quality because they are made by different manufacturers. That is why Erni developed Erni-quality connector solutions for all functionalities of standardised platforms such as ‘AdvancedTCA’ and ‘CompactPCI Express’.

The ERmet module B08 (CPCIe P4), the 7-pin Hard Metric Power Module (CPCIe P1) and the ATCA power connector (Zone 1) close important gaps in the product range.

Their quality characteristics include stamped and stamp-rolled contacts with exact centring and 100% reproducible pressfit zones. That makes the modules absolutely pressfit-capable, ensuring efficient automatic assembly. It means that backplanes of both standard platforms can now be fully assembled with Erni components - with all the advantages of consistently high quality.

Erni has exploited the progress in soldering technology to produce a four-row SMC version with twice the number of contacts taking up the same space as the two-row SMC. The variability is almost unlimited: six different overall heights deliver board to board distances of 8-20 mm with a misalignment tolerance of 2,5 mm. By combining several SMCs and MicroSpeed modules, it is possible to realise just about any functionality on the PCB. Further, instead of the multipart (and complex to fit) interlock for SMC cable connectors, Erni has moulded plastic lugs onto the housing to enable automatic latching upon connection.
