Microchip's new MCP3909 energy-measurement IC combines low power consumption with an SPI interface and active power pulse output. As a part of the MCP3909 3-Phase Energy Meter Reference Design, the IC enables designers to rapidly develop new meter designs.
The MCP3909, in 24-pin SSOP package, features two 16-bit delta-sigma ADCs, data access via its SPI interface, and an active power pulse output. This simultaneous data output makes the IC adaptable to a variety of meter requirements. Its very low (0,1% typical) measurement error over a 1000:1 dynamic range is ideal for meter applications requiring high accuracy, while a low supply current of only 4 mA makes it suitable for many single- and three-phase energy meter designs.
The MCP3909 reference design includes three MCP3909 ICs, and separate PIC18F2520 and PIC18F4550 microcontrollers, in a modular design. The PIC18F2520 performs all power calculations in the reference design, while the PIC18F4550 provides a USB interface to desktop software. The software package that comes with the reference design provides the ability to read active and apparent power, as well as RMS current and RMS voltage enables, and also enables meter calibration.
