Hamamatsu Photonics’ H9858 series are new miniature photomultiplier tube modules. They can operate from two AA batteries making them well-suited for portable instrumentation applications.
Many scientific and medical applications rely on photomultipliers to detect the light generated from fluorescence and luminescence reactions. Hamamatsu provides integrated detector modules to make the detection of these light photons easier, working from the UV (180 nm) through visible to the infrared (920 nm).
Previous generations of PMT modules, such as the popular H5784, H6779 and H6780 series, although having excellent characteristics, have proved difficult to use outside of the laboratory due to their high current consumption. The new H9858 series have around 7% power consumption of these existing sensor modules, and can operate for in excess of 1000 hours on two AA alkaline batteries.
