Ultra-low-power precision temperature sensor

4 April 2007 Test & Measurement

STMicroelectronics' new precision temperature sensor draws less than 4,3 μA (typical) supply current and comes in a tiny 4-lead UDFN package (1,0 x 1,3 x 0,5 mm) making it ideal for cellphones and other battery applications where low power, coupled with small size, accuracy and linearity over a full temperature range, are essential. The STLM20 is a low-current drop-in replacement for the industry-standard LM20 device. This analog-output temperature sensor operates over -55 to 130°C. At 25°C its temperature-to-voltage accuracy is ±1,5°C, and ±2,5°C over the entire operating temp range. Operating from 2,4 V to 5 V, the STLM20 is targeted for the RF section of 3G mobile phones and multimedia PDAs, to monitor transmitter power amplifiers. It is also suitable for temperature-compensated crystal oscillators and battery chargers and other portable applications, such as GPS devices and medical instruments.
