ON Semiconductor’s NCP1396 is a high performance resonant mode controller featuring built-in high-side and-low side MOSFET drivers.
The device enables compact design of reliable and highly efficient power supplies for a variety of applications including flat panel display power converters, high power density AC-DC adapters, industrial power sources and game consoles. The NCP1396A is designed for high power consumer applications and the NCP1396B is ideal for industrial power supplies.
The device includes a 500 kHz voltage controlled oscillator. Because it is important to stay away from the resonating peak in resonant topologies, to keep operating the converter in the right region, the NCP1396 features an adjustable and accurate minimum switching frequency. Supported by proprietary high voltage technology, this controller welcomes a bootstrapped MOSFET driver for half bridge applications accepting bulk voltages up to 600 V. An adjustable dead time helps fight cross-conduction between the upper and the lower transistor and also insures Zero Voltage Switching (ZVS) operation for the primary switches under all load conditions. A skip-cycle mode can be easily implemented to improve standby power and no-load operation efficiency.
The NCP1396 offers multiple protection features, such as broken feedback loop detection, fast and slow events inputs, and brown-out detection, that contribute to a safer converter design and minimise the need for additional complex circuitry.
