New IDC program to assist OEMs and contract manufacturers
14 February 2001
News
To help negotiate the increasingly complex manufacturing market, US analyst group, IDC has launched a programme called 'Contract manufacturing services' - a continuous information service designed to support OEMs and contract manufacturers (CMs). According to IDC, its primary focus is in covering contract manufacturing trends in a variety of technology segments including telecoms, networking, computers, peripherals, consumer devices, servers and storage.
"Manufacturing is becoming much more demanding - product lines are diversifying, time-to-market is becoming even more critical and volumes are rapidly expanding," said Kevin Kane, Manager of the new programme. "OEMs are being challenged to either invest in additional manufacturing infrastructure or turn to contract manufacturers for assistance. As a result, the contract manufacturing industry grew to $75 bn in 1999 and we expect it to approach the $100 bn mark in 2000."
IDC says that OEMs and CMs will each benefit from the insight provided by the programme: OEMs will become familiar with the strengths and strategies of leading CMs in a variety of technology markets, and CMs will receive the strategic information they need to develop their road maps and improve their market positioning.
