Weller's Pyropens allow temperature-controlled soldering without the need for an electrical supply. Weller says that all Pyropens are lightweight and portable, which makes them ideal for service jobs in out-of-the-way places. They are powered by butane gas, and refilling is quick and simple.
One main advantage is the very short heating-up-time of only a few seconds. A wide range of soldering tips and nozzles make them universal to use. A pre-heated catalyst within the tip provides the heat. Temperature control is achieved by varying the gas flow.
Models available are: Pyropen jr (400-500°C); Pyropen (300-500°C); Pyropen- piezo (ignition built-in, 350-500°C); WSTA6 (ignition built-in, 15-60 W).
Also available is the WC100 cordless, powered by a Ni-Cd battery. It has a built-in work light and is rated to 370°C.
