Optical switch connects up to 16 ports in automated test systems

19 September 2007 Test & Measurement

The new AQ2200-412 from Yokogawa is a 1 x 16 low insertion loss optical switch for use in automated test systems. The unit contains 16 ports in a two-slot size module, and allows from one to 16 DUTs (devices under test) to be connected to test instrument modules in Yokogawa's AQ2200 Series modular optical instrumentation system. As a result, different automated test configurations can be developed for the testing of active and passive optical components.

The AQ2200-412 features a low insertion loss of typically 1,0 dB and a very low polarisation-dependent loss of 0,08 dB p-p. As a result, the switch passes most of the light power through the device under test, ensuring that polarisation-dependent loss has virtually no influence on the measurement's accuracy. Other key features of the unit include excellent reproducibility (within ±0,01 dB) to support high-accuracy measurements without the need for frequent reference measurements, and low crosstalk (-60 dB or less) between neighbouring channels.

The AQ2200-412 can be used with either the Yokogawa AQ2201 3-slot mainframe or the AQ2202 9-slot mainframe to form a complete compact optical measurement system that optimises the use of laboratory bench space and is easily portable. The AQ2200 Series is fully equipped with standard interfaces such as USB, LAN, IEEE and Flash card memory, and is supported with a range of 'hot-swappable' plug-in units including a high-stability light source, a wideband tuneable light source, a high-speed optical sensor with low PDL and a high resolution variable optical attenuator.
