LED modules operate directly from AC mains voltage

14 November 2007 Opto-Electronics

The Acriche series from Seoul Semiconductor consists of high-brightness LEDs (HB LEDs) that operate directly off of 110 or 220 V a.c. household mains circuits, without the need for any additional power supply or AC-to-DC conversion circuitry.

The LEDs are provided in the form of small modules with integrated connectors, allowing for easy installation and convenient mounting, and providing the ability to daisy-chain modules for additional light output. They are available in single, dual and quad LED configurations.

The newest Acriche, a 25 mm diameter octagonal single-LED module, provides 96 lumens of white light, at a luminous efficiency of 48 lumens/W. This is comparable to approximately 57 lumens/W in traditional AC mains-driven LED-based systems, since other approaches require power supplies which suffer conversion losses of 10 to 20%.

Acriche HB LEDs are rated for 35 000 hours of life, lasting 35 times longer than common incandescent bulbs and requiring one quarter the amount of energy.
