Range of FPC connectors expands, profiles shrink

28 November 2007 Interconnection

Flexible printed circuit (FPC) connection has earned a reputation as one of the most cost-effective ways to join two circuit boards together. The Omron XF2 series of FPC connectors incorporates Omron's enhanced rotary cable locking mechanism, which allows the connector to be delivered with the slider open. There are currently two variations in the series, with a third in development.

The XF2M 0,5 mm pitch connector features a four-sided FPC housing that facilitates fast and accurate positioning of the FPC prior to closing the slider. Suitable for 0,3 mm thick FPC, the connector has a mounted height of 2,0 mm and is available in a wide range of contact variations from 10-way to 60-way.

The XF2B connectors are 0,3 mm pitch and feature double sided contacts allowing either the upper or lower surface of the FPC to be prepared. XF2B connectors are available with between 17 and 61 contacts, have a low on-board profile of 1,2 mm and are rated at 0,2 A per contact.

The XF2S Range is being designed to be the lowest profile FPC connector in the industry with an on-board mated height of 0,5 mm, corresponding to trends of low profile chip components and LCD modules. The 0,3 mm pitch connector is a side-entry type with upper contacts featuring a slide lock and accepts a 0,12 mm thick FPC.
