Fast thyristor boasts high current rating

20 February 2008 Power Electronics / Power Management

Westcode Semiconductors has launched a new 8000 A, 2800 V, large area fast thyristor. The new device represents the highest current rating fast switching thyristor in this voltage class and breaks new ground for the maximum power that can be controlled in a single converter.

The thyristor has an average current rating of 4001 amperes for a sink temperature of 55°C and is encapsulated in two options of fully hermetic press pack outlines with pole face electrodes of 100 mm in diameter. Options are industry standard 36 mm (part number R3968FC28x) and 26 mm (R3968FD28x) thick packages. 2 kV and 2,4 kV versions are also available as standard.

All device types can be supplied to one of four turn-off time limits: 60, 65, 70 and 100 microseconds. Where required, devices can be selected for their reverse recovery characteristics or supplied in explosion-rated packages.

The devices offer the opportunity to build resonant power supplies for applications such as induction melting and billet heating, by offering potential equipment power rating up to and above 10 Megawatts without the need for many parallel device paths. By optimising turn-off time, the device presents options for switching frequencies up to 8 kHz, or even higher by multiplexing power bridges.
