Rogowski-based AC measurement system

20 February 2008 Test & Measurement

OSI has released a family of AC current measurement systems, designated the MFC 150 series, consisting of flexible Rogowski coils and a multiscale integrator.

One advantage of a Rogowski coil over other types of current transformers is that it can be wrapped around a live conductor without disturbing it. Because its core is air instead of iron, it is also able to respond to fast-changing currents, thanks to its lower inductance, and it is highly linear even at high currents, due to its enhanced saturation qualities. A correctly formed Rogowski coil, with equally spaced windings, is largely immune to electromagnetic interference.

The MFC 150 series can measure currents in the ranges 0,5, 2,5, 10, 50 and 250 kA. Two output types are available: 3 V RMS (full scale instantaneous) or DC output of 0–20 mA, 4–20 mA, 0–1 V or 0–10 V. Accuracy is better than 1% at full-scale and the frequency response is 8 Hz–100 kHz, making the system suitable for harmonic and transient monitoring.
