Fairchild Semiconductor’s new FAN7316 and FAN7317 are said to eliminate up to 30 external components in four lamp circuit inverter designs compared to similar devices on the market. These highly integrated CCFL backlight inverter drive ICs also feature selectable dimming polarity and analog and burst dimming functions. These features, together with a wide input voltage range (4,5 to 24 V for the FAN7316; 6 to 25,5 V for the FAN7317), means that the devices offer flexibility in designing N-N half-bridge, push-pull and P-N full-bridge LCD backlight inverters. Both ICs offer protection functions including a built-in open lamp protection circuit, open lamp regulation, short circuit protection, thermal shutdown, soft-start and arc protection. The FAN7316 and FAN7317 are available in a 20-pin SOIC lead-free package that meets or exceeds the requirements of the joint IPC/JEDEC standard J-STD-020C. Both utilise lead-free terminals and have been characterised for moisture sensitivity in accordance with the lead-free reflow requirements of the joint IPC/JEDEC standard J-STD-020.
