16 April 2008 News

The African Utility Week conference and exhibition will take place in Cape Town from 20 to 23 May 2008. Last year, the event attracted over 1000 from 47 countries. Focusing on the Why, What and How of the business of utilities in Africa, this year’s event has been streamlined into three distinct tracks: Generation Africa; Transmission and Distribution Africa; and Metering, Billing/CRM Africa.

Generation Africa will update the industry on power generation solutions for the ongoing power crisis in Africa. Highlights in this track include power generation planning by Brian Dames from Eskom, generation capacity in Nigeria by Akinwumi Bada from Power Holding Company, a regional utility’s perspective on the conclusion of long-term commercial contracts for new generation facilities by Margaret van der Merwe from Nampower, IPPs as a solution to alleviate energy supply issues by Peter Earl, Ipsa, UK and Eskom’s nuclear plans ahead by Tony Stott from Eskom. Participants will also be given the opportunity to visit three of Africa’s major power generation plants housed in Cape Town.

Transmission and Distribution Africa is an event providing utility professionals with the opportunity to discuss key issues facing the Pan-African TSO and DSO market and to see the latest products and technologies designed to improve reliability in the ever changing T&D market. Highlights in this track include unbundling in Nigeria by Uzoma Achinanya, the status on REDs in South Africa by Willie de Beer from EDI Holdings, the regulation of cross-border power energy trade in Africa by Issa Mare Diaw from ECOWAS Regional Regulation Project, cross-border electrification by Andrew Barfour from the Electricity Company of Ghana, concentric anti-robbery cable product development and social concerns by Sidnei Ueda from Nexans, Brazil and the transition towards a smart transition grid by Tevfik Sezi from Siemens, Germany.

Now in its ninth year, Metering, Billing/CRM Africa is firmly established as the essential meeting place for metering, billing and customer management professionals.

Highlights in this track include synergies between DSM and tariff design by Vashna Singh from Eskom, the City Power smart metering project by Victor Phasha from City Power, better utility management through AMR/AMI by Richard Sanders from Datamatic, USA, the impact of Smart metering on prepaid metering and vending: a utility and customer perspective by Hoosain Essop from the City of Cape Town, MDM: business intelligence for utilities by Chris Ing-Simmons from Oracle, UK and enabling smart grids for the future by Frits Bruggink from Echelon, USA.
