SnakeBytes is a flexible reference design platform for industrial applications, developed jointly by EBV Elektronik, Altera, Avago Technologies, Freescale Semiconductor and National Semiconductor. It features Linux BSP, a PCI solution for high data throughput, a local bus solution for low-latency data transmission including a local bus IP core and several industry-standard interfaces such as CAN and RS485.
SnakeBytes is flexible enough to offer a high degree of computing power, while at the same time being able to meet client-specific I/O requirements, with an easily configurable I/O system based on Altera Stratix II FPGAs. Its main components are an MPC8349 processor-based mainboard, an FPGA-based peripheral/co-processor board and multiple add-on boards for peripherals and I/O configuration.
emlix has developed an embedded Linux package specifically for SnakeBytes. This Linux package supports the configurable peripherals of the FPGA extension board with a modular driver layer and is a standard component of the software package.
The Linux BSP provided is based on Freescale's Linux Target Image Builder (LTIB) for the RioGrande board. It supports a number of FPGA instances and I/O modules: an LCD controller with dedicated SRAM and simple 2D acceleration, a high-speed dual ADC module, a CAN module as well as others. Accompanying demo applications illustrate how to utilise this reference design from within the Linux system.
