Highly precise power analysers

30 April 2008 Test & Measurement

Comtest has introduced the Fluke Norma Series of high-precision power analysers into the South African market. Designed with the latest power measurement technology for the development and test of motors, inverters, lighting systems, power supplies, transformers and automotive components, the series consists of the three-phase Norma 4000 and the six-phase Fluke Norma 5000 power analysers.

Each of these rugged, compact analysers is designed for easy and reliable use in the field or as a bench unit in laboratories and test benches. Based on patented high-bandwidth architecture, they deliver high precision measurements of single or three-phase current and voltage; analysis of voltage, current and power harmonics up to the 40th; Fast Fourier Transformation analysis; as well as calculations of other derived power values.

The units provide complete measurements of both electrical and mechanical power values with an uncertainty of only 0,1%. The simultaneous measurement of electrical and mechanical power parameters in the same time window enables users to observe the influence one component has on another, or on the whole system. A bandwidth up to 10 MHz and a high sampling rate of up to 1 MHz enable detailed signal analysis, while a unique shunt technique enables reliable power measurements at very high frequencies. The processing power enables precise measurements without gapping, ensuring accurate results even with rapidly changing signals.

The analysers are available in a variety of standard configurations with different power phases and modules, to provide users with greater flexibility in meeting a variety of application measurement requirements. The 4 MB RAM data memory is provided for the storage of measured values. Recorded data and waveforms can be viewed clearly in the large colour display and easily downloaded to a PC for analysis and reporting using the included NormaView software. A printer may be connected using the optional printer cable.

The devices comply with the EN 61010-1, 2nd Edition (600 V CAT III/ 1000 V CAT II) safety standard. The instruments measure voltage, current and power, then calculate associated values derived from these measurements. Other useful features include a vector diagram function that shows the phase angle of each signal; a recorder mode that displays average values over time for trend determination; and a digital oscilloscope (DSO) mode that provides a quick view of waveform and distortion.
