DC-DC converter drives blue lasers

STMicroelectronics has introduced a step-up DC-DC converter that is said to be the first on the market to integrate an output current cut-off function. The new ST8R00 is suited to supply blue lasers; it accepts the typical 5 V input voltage and converts it to a higher output voltage to supply blue lasers from 6,5 to 11 V, depending on the laser model and whether it is operating in reading or writing mode. When blue lasers are switched off, even a small current flow can damage it, or the whole application. Instead of requiring designers to add an external current cut-off block, the device includes this feature on-chip. Other features include a typical efficiency of 90%, a range of output voltages adjustable from 6 to 12 V, an output current up to 1 A, and a high switching frequency enabling the device to operate with small and low-cost inductors.
