Microchip's PICDEM.net Ethernet/Internet demonstration board with a TCP/IP stack to enable embedded connectivity over industrial and appliance networks is a new tool for engineers to explore Microchip's various TCP/IP solutions.
The PICDEM.net board uses the 40-pin PIC16F877 Flash microcontroller and TCP/IP firmware for the network interface. After the initial set-up of the IP Ethernet address, engineers can access the various functions on the board through a network or the Internet. The firmware was developed by Jeremy Bentham based on his book 'TCP/IP lean: Web servers for embedded systems'. A copy of the book is included in the PICDEM.net package.
The PICDEM.net board has an Ethernet and RS232 interfaces. A standard web browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator is used to display inputs from the board (potentiometers and switches) and drive the LCD display and control LEDs. The PICMICRO device acts as a webserver that can serve HTML web pages. The initial board configuration is performed via the RS232 port using a standard terminal program to configure the IP and Ethernet addresses.
The demo board is also equipped with a 6-pin modular connector to interface directly with Microchip's MPLAB in-circuit debugger (ICD). With the addition of the MPLAB-ICD, the developer can now modify or reprogram the on-board Flash-based microcontroller to meet specific needs. A generous 'bread-boarding' area is also available to add special circuits for experimentation.
Several status indicators and user interface devices are provided, including a 16 x 2 LCD indicator and LEDs. The board also includes the MPLAB integrated development environment, user's guides, Cat 5 Ethernet cable, DB9 serial cable and a universal power supply.
