Multifuse product line continues to grow

11 April 2001 Circuit & System Protection

Bourns, a leading manufacturer of passive components, recently expanded its Multifuse product line. The new products were launched at electronica 2000:

Miniature fast-reacting SMT PPTCs

The MF-USMD family of SMT resettable fuses has a small footprint and is perfect when board space is at a premium. Bourns Multifuse polymer PTCs offer overcurrent protection for a variety of applications, including motherboards, add-on cards, disk drives, peripherals and handheld devices. The MF-USMD family comes in a range of hold currents from 50 mA to 1,1 A and is suitable for most low voltage applications. The family has voltage ratings from 6 to 30 V and trip times of less than 0,3 s (at 23°C and 8 A). The 1210/3225 footprint is a 40% reduction in size from the MF-MSMD family (1812/4532 footprint). These devices have UL, CSA certification.

SMT high current 1812 mils/4532 mm footprint PPTCs

Bourns introduced five new 1812/4532 SMT parts to the existing MF-MSMD family of PPTC resettable fuses. These parts extend the hold current range from 1,25, 1,50, 2,00 and 2,6 A while maintaining the same 1812/4532 footprint, useful for high-density board applications. These parts are used in circuit protection designs for USB ports, Firewire ports, add-on cards, disk drives and peripherals. The MF-MSMD family of PPTCs has voltage ratings from 6 to 8 V and has low internal resistances ranging from 30 to 60 MOhm. The higher current devices are using Bourns proprietary multilayer technology to maintain the 1812 footprint while providing designers with greater flexibility.

Small size radial leaded devices for faster tripping

High hold current devices in a smaller diameter package now offer faster trip times and reduced trip-to-hold ratios. The MF-RG family has hold currents available from 3 to 11 A in a 16 V/100 A Imax/Vmax radial package. These devices are used extensively in the automotive industry for protection of relays, microcontrollers, solenoids and electronics control units. The MF-RG family is rated to operate in environments from -40 to +85°C. The entire MF-RG family has been tested to the AEC-Q200 automotive test standard.

Low switching temperature and low resistance battery overcurrent protectors

Bourns Multifuse now offers a new line of battery strap protection devices, giving designers of polymer lithium and lithium ion battery packs greater choice and flexibility in their circuit designs. The new MF-VS family has trip temperatures of 80°C and resistance values of 18 to 30 mOhm. The MF-VS family offers hold currents from 1,7 to 2,4 A and can be produced with a variety of lead length options.

High surge voltage capable devices for telecoms

A line of radial and SMT parts that can withstand the high surge voltages of today's telecom industry are offered in a variety of hold currents from 80 to 180 mA in a radial style that have an operating voltage of 60 V and a surge capability up to 250 V for short durations. The SMT version has a hold current of 130 mA with the same 60 V operating voltage and 250 V surge capability. The MF-Rxxx/250 and MF-SMxxx/250 families have been tested to the rugged ITU K.20/K.21 test standards and are in compliance with Bellcore GR-1089 and FCC Part 68 with additional line resistance. The higher voltage families are used extensively in the telecom industry for SLIC card, POTS, DSL and data line protection.
