Epcos has developed a new rugged series of multiple-pulse MP varistors. These protective components are particularly suited for applications in which frequent overvoltage pulses can be expected, such as in switch-mode power supplies or overvoltage protection modules.
The varistors are offered with diameters of 10, 14 and 20 mm. They can withstand surge currents of 1,5 to 5 kA with 15 pulses of 8/20 μs at intervals of 60 seconds. Their response voltages cover the range from 275 to 460 V a.c.
This improved performance was achieved via an optimised ceramic production process that leads to significantly lower derating compared with standard ceramics. Approval to UL 1449 3rd edition type 2 (permanently connected) applies.
