JDSU supports EFEC 1.4

1 April 2009 Test & Measurement

JDSU has added a new option for its TestPoint 10 Gbps product line by providing support for enhanced forward error correction 1.4 (EFEC 1.4), to support the ITU-T recommendation of Applied Micro Circuits Corporation’s (AMCC’s) EFEC technology.

AMCC’s forward errorcorrection code is designed into system solutions for Metro Ethernet and Carrier-Grade Ethernet applications as well as long haul WDM and Metro WDM transport networks.

AMCC’s EFEC is deployed in many of the world’s largest optical networks, and is important because it is a turnkey, standards-compliant solution that enables low-cost Carrier Ethernet services over Metro, Core and OTN networks. This makes it possible for a 10 GigE data stream to be encapsulated into an OTU2 frame and transported over the optical network, providing a distinct cost, power and space advantage in Ethernet-to-OTN convergence.

With AMCC’s EFEC 1.4, the TestPoint 10 Gbps can help users meet the complex challenge of directly connecting Ethernet to OTNs. JDSU’s EFEC 1.4 option makes it possible for users to switch between ITU G.709 FEC (GFEC) and ITU G.975.1 EFEC 1.4 with a click of a mouse, as well as inject and monitor FEC errors. The TestPoint EFEC 1.4 licensed option is available in addition to a 10G.709 Digital Wrapper/FEC option, which includes GFEC test capability. Users can select between adding GFEC and/or EFEC 1.4 to the supported rates and protocols on the 10 Gbps module.
