Embedded motherboards with Core2 Duo performance

10 June 2009 Computer/Embedded Technology

Kontron recently released three new embedded motherboards with 45 nm Intel Core2 Quad and Intel Core2 Duo processors in the form factors Mini-ITX, Flex-ATX and ATX.

Based on the Mobile Intel GM45 chipset, the KTGM45 boards offer an attractive performance-per-watt ratio and up to date interface technology, like PCI Express x16, without neglecting embedded designers’ needs. They still carry, for example, four serial interfaces alongside the 12 USB 2.0 interfaces. They also offer more PCB layers than conventional motherboards, in order to achieve high signal qualities and optimise electromagnetic compatibility. The new motherboards also feature solid capacitors, which offer extended lifetime compared to conventional electrolyte capacitors, as well as little to no wear-out even at high temperatures.

The range of interfaces and flexibility for connecting monitors via S-video, VGA, LVDS, DVI and HDMI make the new motherboards suited to computation-intensive visual computer systems in medical, automation, digital signage, security and video surveillance markets. Graphically intensive applications can benefit from the integrated DirectX10 graphics with Shader Model 4.0 for VGA and SDVO with DVI and HDMI via the PCI Express x16 slot. Resolutions of up to 2048 x 1536 via CRT and 1920 x 1080 via LVDS enable direct input to Full HD panels in native resolution.

KTGM45 embedded motherboards support all Intel processors with PGA 478 socket up to the 45 nm Intel Core2 Duo T9400 processor. With the Intel Mobile 82GM45 Graphics and Memory Controller Hub and the Intel I/O Controller Hub (Intel ICH9EM) they offer a low chipset TDP of 14,5 Watts, as well as DDR3 RAM for energy-efficient embedded designs. They also support Intel Active Management Technology (Intel AMT 4.0) for remote management and easy maintenance.

The embedded motherboard family also aids data intensive applications with up to 8 GB of energy efficient DDR3 SDRAM. To suit the needs of applications with extensive interface requirements, they additionally offer one PCI Express x4, up to five PCI and three Intel Gigabit Ethernet, one of these with Intel AMT support. They also have 12 USB 2.0, four RS232C, one parallel and one PS/2 port. On top of this, the Mini-ITX version offers two Firewire (IEEE1394) and one Compact Flash Type I + II for specific extensions for compact system designs. Storage media can be connected via four SATA interfaces with RAID 0/1/5/10 functionality for high data security, and one additional ATA100 port.
