Electronic motor starters for round cable power bus

10 June 2009 Power Electronics / Power Management

The electronic motor starters of the gesis MCU range from Wieland Electric electronically switch drives with power up to 1,5 kW and are nearly wear-free.

The compact motor starters for the pluggable gesis IP+ round cable power bus are suitable for confined installation spaces in conveyor systems. They are parameterised directly through the AS-i bus which is advantageous for motor starter commissioning and replacement.

Conveyor systems are increasingly subdivided into small modular segments that are assembled only during final installation. This is an advantage not only for final inspection and transport, but also as the conveyor line as a whole becomes more flexible. For extension or modification of existing production processes, existing systems are simply shifted. Electrical cabling using the pluggable gesis IP+ round cable power bus follows this trend and offers an alternative to components installed centrally inside a control cabinet. The system is fast and protected against mismating.

The motor starters are installed close to the motor along the conveyor line. They can either be integrated directly in the power bus line or be installed in a different location. Connection to the fieldbus is performed using pluggable connectors. The modules are available as direct starters for starting and stopping, or as reversing starters for starting, stopping and reversing of a motor. External sensors such as initiators or light barriers can be connected directly via M12 stud bolts.

As an alternative to the pluggable round cable power bus, the new motor starters can also be supplied with energy using the 7-pole flat cable power bus with 400 V and the signals of the AS-i bus. The system is designed for IP 65 protection.
