Axon supplies a range of small cable harnesses for medical applications. In designing them, the company has followed the principle that all the components in a fully terminated ‘plug-and-play’ harness can be subjected to miniaturisation, even the precision stranded conductors which are manufactured in-house and can be as small as 0,04 mm in diameter.
Axon has available a range of insulation materials which can offer wall thicknesses down to 0,03 mm. Standard materials used are FEP, PTFE, CELLOFLON (Axon’s cellular PTFE), PBT (thermoplastic polyester), PE, PVC and PU. Silicone and thermoplastic elastomer materials are also used. Some of these materials have been tested and approved for the most common sterilisation processes, such as autoclave, ethylene oxide or plasma sterilisation (Sterrad, Steris) as well as for disinfection with glutaraldehyde-based products, for example Cidex or Korsolex. The company’s thermoplastic and silicone compounds are made of non-toxic materials and pigments and most of them have been tested in accordance to USP class VI and ISO 10993.
The interconnect department is equipped with advanced tooling for crimping and welding fine wire and coaxial cables with pitches as fine as 0,5 mm or even smaller if required. Terminated with 1,27 mm pitch micro-D or 0,635 mm nano-D connectors, including jack screw if required, harnesses can be over-moulded, giving totally sealed units suitable for sterilisation. Strain reliefs designed for each application can provide superior flexlife.
