Gas discharge tubes

Bourns now offers an economical three-electrode surface mount gas discharge tube (GDT). The 2054 series is designed for board level protection of broadband applications due to its low capacitance, giving it protection characteristics suitable for telecommunications, commercial and industrial applications. These units are available in voltages from 230 to 470 V.

These gas discharge tubes help prevent damage from transient disturbances by acting as a 'crowbar' in creating a short-to-ground circuit during conduction. When an electrical surge exceeds the defined breakdown voltage level of the GDT, the device becomes ionised and rapid conduction takes place. When the surge passes and the system voltage returns to normal levels, the GDT returns to its high-impedance (off) state. RoHS compliant versions are available.
