Ambient light sensing photodiode

24 June 2009 Opto-Electronics

Vishay has broadened its optoelectronics portfolio with the introduction of a photodiode-based ambient light sensor in a compact 0805-sized surface-mount package, featuring a 0,85 mm profile and simple 2-pin connection. The new TEMD6200FX01 reacts to light like the human eye to allow automatic control of LCD brightness and keypad backlighting and to enable a number of advanced automotive driver comfort and safety features.

The TEMD6200FX01 utilises Vishay’s infrared filtering epoxy technology to match the spectral sensitivity of the human eye with minimal sensitivity to light beyond the visible range. For consumer electronics, the device can be used to reduce power consumption by turning on keypad backlights only in low ambient conditions, and control LCD display brightness to optimise viewing based on ambient light.

Designed and qualified according to AEC-Q101 for automotive applications, the sensor enables automatic headlight control, tunnel sensors, and displays that adjust automatically to changes in ambient brightness. The sensor also serves as an environmentally friendly alternative to cadmium-based photo resistors, the elimination of which has been mandated by RoHS legislation.

The device offers an angle of half sensitivity of ±60°, a radiant sensitive area of 0,3 mm², and a peak sensitivity of 540 nm. Good lot-to-lot repeatability over the extended operating temperature range of -40°C to +100°C allows customers to eliminate calibration steps in their manufacturing process.
