Surface mount GDT surge protectors

Bourns has announced a new series of three-electrode surface mount gas discharge tube (GDT) surge protection devices which are optimised for broadband applications due to their low capacitance and low insertion and return-loss performance. Designated the 2054 series, the robust devices are available in voltages from 230 to 470 V and also feature RoHS compliant versions. The GDTs feature a compact size of 5 x 7,2 mm and offer protection characteristics suitable for a broad range of systems including telecommunications, commercial and industrial applications. 
The devices help prevent damage from transient disturbances by creating a short-to-ground circuit during conduction. When an electrical surge exceeds the defined breakdown voltage level of the GDT, the device becomes ionised and rapid conduction takes place. When the surge passes and the system voltage returns to normal levels, the GDT returns to its high-impedance ‘off’ state.
