Highly sensitive GPS receiver

11 November 2009 Electronics Technology

The IT500 GPS module from Fastrax enables navigation in demanding applications and solid fix even in harsh GPS environments. Cold start sensitivity of -148 dBm makes it possible to acquire satellite signals and start navigating in places with poor GPS signal reception.

The receiver is suited for asset tracking devices with covert installations (weak signal environment) and battery operated consumer products like personal navigation devices, handheld computers, cameras and sports accessories. It is also well suited as a receiver for GPS mouse and Mini PCI card applications, due to its compact design and the option to interface with USB 2.0.

The IT500 has navigation sensitivity of -165 dBm, making it possible to continue navigation in difficult environments such as indoors or urban canyons. Its fix rate is configurable up to 10 Hz by user command, making it suitable for extremely high dynamics applications. Its very high sensitivity also compensates for the possible negative effect of host system EMI. The module has an internal switching regulator which makes it possible to use a Li-Ion battery supply directly without any external regulators. It also has a built-in high-speed USB 2.0 interface which can be used to interface with host devices.
