Micropower amplifier/comparator combos reduce power and board space

9 May 2001 Analogue, Mixed Signal, LSI

Two new device families from Texas Instruments offer micropower and integrated amplifier/comparator operation on a single integrated circuit. The TLV230x family is a combination micropower amplifier and micropower open-drain comparator. The TLV270x family is the combination of a micropower amplifier and a micropower push-pull comparator.

These amplifier and comparator combinations reduce system costs by eliminating extra parts required in applications using both amplifiers and comparators. The devices represent a 15% reduction in board space requirements by using a single, integrated, 8-pin MSOP package versus two separate SOT-23 packages. Both families are available in standard dual and quad-operational amplifier pinouts, allowing them to be used in application designs currently using op-amps as comparators.

The two new families also provide built-in added protection features, including 18 V reverse-battery protection circuitry and an input common-voltage range that extends from the negative rail to 5 V above-the-positive rail. These features increase the ruggedness and dynamic range of applications without the need for extra parts and circuitry typically required.

Both the TLV230x and TLV270x devices draw only 1,4 µA (typ) per amplifier and comparator pair. Both the op-amps and comparators feature a common-mode input range that extends from -0,1 to VS +5 V, as well as output stages that swing from rail to rail. The op-amps are unity gain stable with a typical gain bandwidth (GBW) of 5,5 kHz and a slew rate of 2,5 V/ms. They also feature a low input bias current (IIB) of 100 pA, input offset voltage (VIO) of 390 µV and common-mode input range (CMRR) of 73 dB (typical specifications at VS = 2,7 V).
