Cap-free, linear regulators provide low dropout and low noise

9 May 2001 Power Electronics / Power Management

The Burr-Brown REG10x family of cap-free, low-noise, ultra-low dropout linear regulators (LDOs) from Texas Instruments offers 100 mA to 1 A output without the requirement of capacitors or external supplies.

The new DMOS topology provides significant improvement over previous designs and allows the REG101/102/103/104/113 LDOs to provide the lowest dropout rate in their class, according to the manufacturer.

Unlike conventional LDOs that are difficult to compensate and require expensive low ESR capacitors greater than 1 µF, none of the REG10x LDOs require an output capacitor for stability.

Typical ground pin current is only 1 mA at IOUT = 500 mA and drops to 0,5 µA in 'not enabled' mode. The REG10x family also is unlike regulators with bipolar pass devices. Quiescent current remains relatively constant over load variations and under dropout conditions.

These LDOs have very low noise output between 28 and 35 µVRMS for VOUT = 3,3 V with CNR = 0,01 µF (typ), making them ideally suited for noise-sensitive applications such as telecom, datacom and wireless. Specific applications include portable communication devices, battery-powered equipment, modems, personal digital assistants, bar-code scanners and back-up power supplies.

On-chip trimming results in high output voltage accuracy. Accuracy is maintained over temperature, line and load variations.

The REG10x family is available in SOT-23-5, SOT-223-5, DDPAK-5 and SO-8 small surface-mount packages.
