The AP8803 from Diodes Incorporated is a step-down DC/DC converter designed to drive LEDs with a constant current.

The device can drive up to seven LEDs, depending on their forward voltage, in series from a voltage source of 8 V to 30 V. Series connection of the LEDs provides identical LED currents, resulting in uniform brightness and eliminating the need for ballast resistors.

The driver switches at frequencies up to 700 kHz, enabling the use of physically small external components. Housed in a TSOT23-5 package and requiring only four external components, this solution produces a small overall footprint. The device’s accuracy, temperature range and cost make it well suited to cost-sensitive domestic lighting applications.

It is available in green mould compound as standard.
