ANT chip a finalist in EDN awards

14 April 2010 News

Ultra low power (ULP) RF specialist Nordic Semiconductor and leading ULP protocol developer ANT Wireless recently announced that the nRF24AP2 8-channel single-chip ANT solution has been selected from hundreds of nominations to be a finalist in the networking category of this year's EDN Innovation Awards.

The award summary from EDN's editors describing the features of the nRF24AP2 that attracted the finalist nomination reads: "The chip acts as a hub, simultaneously supporting up to eight active sensor channels in peer-to-peer, star, tree and mesh topologies. In cycling, the nRF24AP2 allows for simultaneous monitoring of heart rate, speed and distance, crank power and cadence, with four channels to spare. The nRF24AP2's peak currents are 20% lower than those of its forerunner [the nRF24AP1], and average currents are 75% lower. In a heart-rate monitoring application used 1,2 hours per day with a 500 ms reporting interval, the average current is 14 μA, allowing a 220 mAh, 3 V coin cell/watch battery to last for nearly two years. The 5 x 5 mm nRF24AP2 has an on-air data rate of 1 Mbps at a 2,4 GHz operating frequency.

Instituted in 1990, EDN’s Innovation Awards from honour the people, products and technologies that have shaped the global electronics industry over the past year. Finalists must demonstrate innovation that resulted in a significant advance in technology and/or product development during the past 12 months, and for products this includes shipping in volume during the 2009 calendar year.

The nRF24AP2 is a combination of Nordic transceiver technology combined with ANT Wireless' ANT protocol stack to produce a 2,4 GHz ULP wireless single-chip solution optimised for low data rate sensor network topologies in personal area networks (PANs) and practical wireless sensor networks (WSNs).

"We are very proud that the nRF24AP2 has received such prestigious recognition from one of the leading US electronic engineering design journals," commented Geir Langeland, Nordic Semiconductor's director of Sales & Marketing. "The nRF24AP2 is the direct result of many years of engineering development by Nordic and its valued partner ANT Wireless. To see the hard work and ingenuity of the engineers from both companies being recognised by such a major award programme is very gratifying."

"The selection of the nRF24AP2 ANT chip as a highly innovative product by the editors of EDN reinforces our belief that this is a unique device in the 2,4 GHz ULP sector," says Brian Macdonald, Director – ANT Wireless. "It also represents one more notable success of the five-year ANT Wireless/Nordic Semiconductor collaboration. Together with its forerunner, the nRF24AP1, these ANT chips power more than seven million wireless nodes worldwide in sectors such as sport, fitness and health personal monitoring, while offering proven interoperability through ANT+, managed by the 220 member ANT+ Alliance."
