20 W power supplies for LEDs

14 April 2010 Power Electronics / Power Management

To fulfil the lower wattage demand of LED lighting and decorative lighting market, Mean Well has introduced two new series of 20 W LED power supplies. With an isolated plastic enclosure, the PLN-20 series can reach IP64 waterproof/ dustproof level by virtue of its mechanical design. With the casing removed and boasting a miniature PCB design, the PLP-20 series offers cost savings on the mechanical parts.

To fulfil the power factor requirements of lighting norms, the power supplies employ a simplified single-stage PFC topology, enabling them to economically achieve a power factor of at least 0,9 while complying with EN61000-3-2 Class C (harmonic current) for output loading higher than 75%, which meets the general requirement for lighting fixtures. In addition, efficiencies of both series are as high as 83,5%, allowing them to operate at full load between -30°C and +60°C.

Through adjustment of a built-in potentiometer, the output current levels of the PSUs can be fine tuned between 75 and 100% of their rated value. Other standard functions include short circuit, overload, over-voltage and over-temperature protections. The units come equipped with 18 AWG/30 cm input/output cables for flexible installation in various systems. Both series comply with global certificates per TUV/UL/CUL/CE, including major lighting regulations such as UL8750, EN61347-1 and EN61347-2-13.
