Silicon surge protection diodes

28 April 2010 Circuit & System Protection

STMicroelectronics has announced what it believes to be the first silicon surge protectors meeting international surge-protection standard IEC 61000-4-5, with a family of devices delivering high reliability and effective protection throughout the entire operating temperature range.

The STIEC45 Transil family provides mandatory protection for power supplies against surges, electrostatic discharge and electrical fast transients. Metal-oxide varistors (MOVs) are usually connected to prevent surge energy reaching the power supply, but silicon surge protectors tend to be more reliable. ST’s Transils maintain more than 75% of their protection capability up to 150°C, and are soldered to standard-sized metal pads on printed circuit board. This approach delivers a space-efficient solution for equipment operating in high-temperature environments, such as factories or vehicles.

The devices also meet IEC 61000-4-2 for ESD and IEC 61000-4-4 for electrical fast transient (EFT), as well as passing MIL-STD-883 (Method 3015) ESD tests. They feature 500 A (8/20 μs) peak pulse-current capability and 410 A (8/20 μs) current capability at 150°C. Leakage current is a low 0,2 μA at 25°C and 1 μA at 85°C. Stand-off voltage options include 24, 26, 28, 30 and 33 V.
