OVP for wind turbines

28 April 2010 Circuit & System Protection

The VAL-MS 800/30 VF/FM overvoltage protection (OVP) device for wind turbines was specifically designed by Phoenix Contact to protect the rotors of double-fed induction generators (DFIGs). It is also possible to protect synchronous generators for permanently excited machines and converters on the generator side for all generator types. Three modules are available for these applications that can be easily connected using the MPB 18/1-6 wiring bridge.

The product offers application-oriented protective features and has a long service life due to its design that avoids leakage currents. The connector and base element form one unit. The connectors are mechanically locked and are resistant to shock and vibration; they do not have to be installed in separate housings. The status is directly displayed if a connector develops a defect due to an overload caused by an over-voltage. It can then be simply replaced. The floating PDT contact allows the arrester to be remotely monitored.

On the stator side, the VAL-MS 750/30/3FM module rounds off the protective concept for the widely established double-fed induction generator (DFIG).
