M12 male connectors

12 May 2010 Interconnection

Erni has designed a family of M12 male connectors which can be ‘directly integrated’, meaning that the device housing thus becomes part of the connector since it can be produced in a single operation with the coding and the locking thread. This makes them suitable for fully automatic SMT soldering process and saves on threaded parts as well as their assembly requirements.

The coding is determined by means of the injection moulded or die-cast housing. The sealing of the housing is performed via an O-ring, the assembly of which is optional. In addition, the turned contact seals the insulating body by means of special contours. The entire system is thereby waterproof, even when unconnected. Tightness with regard to casting compounds typically exists; this, however, must be tested in a particular project with the respective casting compound. Considerably different coefficients of expansion of the materials may lead to the necessity of the use of THR technology for better absorption of the forces that may affect the solder joints with casting technology due to temperature cycles and loads from vibrations and shocks.
