Integrated solution enables cost-effective scalable designs that support evolving network services

23 May 2001 Computer/Embedded Technology

QNX Software Systems, developers of OS technology for next-generation broadband networks, and NetPlane Systems, a global supplier of networking protocol software, have introduced an integrated solution that the companies claim will enable communications equipment manufacturers to more easily develop scalable routers and switches.

Engineers at both companies collaborated to pre-integrate the high-performance QNX realtime OS with NetPlane's common LEAP architecture. The resulting solution provides developers with much-needed functionality to create flexible networking equipment that can handle ongoing increases in traffic in a changing software environment.

"We have taken our complementary strengths, which focus on the carrier-class capabilities of redundancy, scalability, and high availability, and combined them to reduce risks for customers building core networking equipment," said Al Cooley, NetPlane's Director of Business Development. "This translates into decreased development costs, accelerated new-product development, and faster conversion-to-revenue generation."

"The QNX-NetPlane solution is geared toward developers who want more power without sacrificing reliability," added Sebastien Marineau, Networking Architect at QNX. "As broadband networks push their architecture to new levels of speed and capacity, the underlying equipment needs to be even more reliable. This is something that QNX has always offered - in everything from life-critical dialysis machines to the Canadarm2 vision system for the international space station."

"The QNX realtime OS brings high availability to telecommunications equipment with hot-swap architecture, low-level memory protection, software fault recovery and dynamic upgradability. It is the only RTOS to offer both symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) capabilities and built-in distributed networking. As a result, developers can create a scalable design that will support the evolving complexity of network services without expensive system reengineering."

NetPlane offers a number of high-performance source code packages that can be easily integrated into virtually any new or existing system, encompassing MPLS, IP routing, ATM and Frame Relay. The files that integrate both the QNX realtime OS and socket interfaces to NetPlane's LEAP layer are being offered at no charge to customers of both companies.
