Power manager for multimedia application processors

23 June 2010 Power Electronics / Power Management

Maxim’s new MAX8893 is a highly integrated power management IC for multimedia application processors. This device includes one step-down converter, three low-noise LDOs, two low-supply-current LDOs, one low-on-resistance load switch and one Hi-Speed USB switch – all in a 2,5 x 3,0 mm, 30-bump wafer-level package (WLP). All regulators and switches have individual enable pins that allow designers to turn on/off different functional blocks to save power and extend battery life.

For enhanced performance, the integrated LDOs provide low 45 μVRMS output noise and a low dropout of only 100 mV at 100 mA, as well as a very low, 21 μA ground current for longer battery life. These LDOs have programmable output voltages for ease of use in numerous applications. The 4 MHz buck converter allows small external components and features dynamic voltage scaling (DVS) control of the ramp rate (from 1 mV/μs to 12 mV/μs). The load switch features on-resistance of 50 mΩ and operates from an input voltage of 0,8 V to 2,4 V.
