Optical networking platform

23 June 2010 Telecoms, Datacoms, Wireless, IoT

Transition Networks announced the introduction of the ION platform, a new family of intelligent optical networking devices built to meet the increasing demand of today’s networks in terms of manageability and security. At the core of the platform is a 2U 19-inch rack mountable chassis that is designed to house up to 19 slide-in conversion modules along with two power supply modules, with all slots being hot-swappable.

A typical application would include the ION chassis, an ION management module and a redundant power supply. A variety of Fast Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet fibre conversion modules are also available to meet customers’ specific network requirements. The faceplates on the slide-in modules have a brushed nickel finish that provides a durable service life while still being RoHS compliant.

The management module allows users to remotely monitor the current operating status of each slide-in module. Each module has an extensive set of features and functions that can be controlled. A network administrator can securely configure, monitor and troubleshoot ION slide-in-modules remotely through a Web browser, a command line interface (CLI), via telnet or with a third party SNMP application. Each slot in the ION chassis is numbered, so users can quickly identify individual cards after monitoring them through the management interface. Secure access control to the management module is provided by support for management VLAN, SSH, SSL, 802.1x. and SNMP v1 and v2.

The power supply modules are fully manageable. Both 100-240 V a.c. and -48 V d.c. power supplies are available. While only one power supply is needed to power a fully loaded ION chassis, the option of a second power supply offers redundancy by functioning in an instant fail-over mode of operation. Power supply status LEDs are mounted on the frame of the chassis to provide at-a-glance information while keeping the slots free for conversion modules.
