High-performance heatsinks

23 May 2001 Power Electronics / Power Management

Alutronic offers a generation of high-performance heatsinks. The caulked cooling fins are of an entirely new design that the company says gives them optimal thermal properties.

The relationship of surface structure to fin thickness is designed to give highly efficient performance from heatsinks between 100 and 250 mm in length. The spacing between the fins has been adapted to suit new fans which produce higher air flow volume and pressure. The result is a 20% increase in efficiency without any decline in performance. A smaller heat dissipation area, ie less aluminium and consequently lower costs and less weight, is needed to yield the same degree of cooling effect.

According to Alutronic, the weight of aluminium used by the heatsink to dissipate 1 W of thermal power and raise the temperature of the surrounding air by 1°C has been decreased to approximately 140 g, as compared with between 170 and 200 g needed by conventional high-performance heatsinks.

These high-performance heatsinks can be supplied in versions up to 400 mm wide and 130 mm high.
