Ellies provides installer training

In August 2009, Ellies incepted its Installer Training School with the purpose of empowering the unemployed and potential entrepreneurs in South Africa. The school grants each learner with not only the necessary skills needed in business and life, but also empowers them with the skills to install aerial, satellite and sound systems. To date, Ellies has equipped 150 learners with installation skills. The installer, once established in an area, receives support from the Elsat voucher system and Ellies technical advisors, enabling the graduates to build a reputation.
It is Ellies’ stated goal to sustain an installer base in the previously disadvantaged areas to benefit from South Africa’s digital migration and the upswing in satellite TV in the rural areas. The migration to digital TV is a huge project which could affect over 9,2 million households and is to be implemented by 2015, which is when the analog TV signal will become unprotected. When the digital migration takes place, a large percentage of these households will need to replace their aerials and the country will need sufficient resources to do these installations.
The course has seen graduates from all walks of life. Tsholofelo Majeng from Kuruman was the first lady to graduate, and was at the top of her class. In February 2010, Majeng started a business called Maikemisetso Satellites situated in Kuruman, and was performing approximately six installations a week. She says, “To further advance my business in April 2010, I enrolled in the Ellies Installer Training School. Since graduating from the programme, installations have improved to 14 a day and my staff has increased from one, to a total of four installers.”
The full-time course consists of two parts for a duration of one week. The theoretical and practical parts run from Monday to Friday with a test written on the Saturday. There is a course presented once a month, 10 months of the year. The required pass rate of the test is 70% in order to complete the course successfully. The modules are presented by Ellies staff members, all experienced in their specific fields.
