High-speed linear image sensor

27 October 2010 Opto-Electronics

Hamamatsu Photonics is offering a wide range of CMOS linear image sensors for use in analytical instruments such as spectrophotometers and industrial process monitoring equipment.

A new range of CMOS linear image sensors has recently been developed, which offers very high-speed response whilst maintaining high resolution.

The new S11105 series offers high-speed readout of up to 50 MHz. This pixel data rate is achieved via a single output video line, unlike conventional high-speed CCDs that use multiple output video lines (or taps) to achieve higher speed operation. In addition to the high-speed readout at 50 MHz, the S11105 includes an electronic shutter function to facilitate accurate high-speed imaging. The new device has 512 pixels with a 12,5 μm pitch giving an aspect ratio of 20:1, thus allowing 20 times the light collection area compared to conventional linear CCDs.

The new device incorporates 512 individual photodiode elements with buffer amplifier, digital shift register and signal processing circuit all on the same monolithic silicon chip. All of the necessary clock generation functions are provided on-chip, easing system design and implementation. The S11105 series is also available in two versatile packaging types; dual in-line (DIL) and surface mount options.

The sensors are ideal for applications such as in-line product inspection, portable spectrometers, industrial process control, colour monitoring, medical diagnostics, distance measurement, optical encoders, blood analysers, optical scanners and water pollution analysers.
