Medical and IT power supplies

25 May 2011 Power Electronics / Power Management

XP Power announced the launch of its AHM series of external AC-DC power supplies aimed at a broad range of medical and IT applications. The series comprises five single-output ranges of 85, 100, 150, 180 and 250 Watts, and provides the popular nominal outputs from +12 to + 48 V d.c. All units are convection cooled, removing the need for any internal forced air flow. Not only does this make the units more reliable, but it ensures quiet operation, which is especially important for healthcare equipment sited close to a patient.

Rated ‘Energy Efficiency Level V’, these units offer typical efficiency of 92% and meet the stringent requirements of global energy efficiency standards both in terms of average power efficiency and less than 0,5 W no-load power consumption. Use of the AHM series enables manufacturers to ensure compliance with standards such as EISA2007, CEC2008 and the European ErP directive. In addition, the units meet the internationally recognised safety approval standards for medical equipment (IEC/UL/EN/CSA 60601-1) and IT and commercial equipment (IEC/UL/EN/CSA 60950-1). They also conform to the medical EMC standard, IEC60601-1-2:2007, meeting level B radiated/conducted emissions to EN55011/22 and the relevant EN61000 immunity standards.

Due to the high efficiency of the units it has been possible to design the enclosure with a smooth surface; this allows it to be easily wiped down in a hospital environment. Additionally, the enclosure has an IPX1 rating that protects against ingress of condensation and falling water droplets. Class I construction is standard on all models, with the 85 W and 100 W models also available with Class II construction and connector options of IEC320-C14, IEC320-C8 or IEC320-C18. An optional input connector retention clip is also available across the range.
