Linear image sensor
20 July 2011, Opto-Electronics

New from Hamamatsu Photonics is the S11108 linear CMOS image sensor with APS (active pixel sensor) technology. The latest APS technology allows the device to achieve a combination of very high sensitivity at 50 V/(lx·s) together with a high-speed video data rate of 10 MHz. This is accomplished by simultaneously integrating charge for all pixels and allows the sensor to offer comparable sensitivity to high performance linear CCD sensors.

The S11108 features a long detector active area of 28,67 mm, consisting of 2048 individual pixels, each measuring 14 by 14 μm. The device also features an electronic shutter function and a built-in timing generator allowing operation with only start and clock pulse inputs, enabling very simple operation only requiring a single 5 V power supply to run.

The image sensor is suitable for various high-precision and high-speed sensing applications including in-line inspection, position detection, encoders, image reading, barcode readers, alignment systems, optical scanners, colour measurement, medical diagnostics and visible spectrometers.
