Solar inverters

17 August 2011 Power Electronics / Power Management

Power-One recently launched four new PV (photovoltaic) inverters: the AURORA MICRO-0.3 micro-inverter, the redesigned AURORA UNO-2.0 and UNO-2.5 single phase inverters, the AURORA TRIO-27.6 and TRIO-20.0 three-phase string inverters and the AURORA ULTRA-1400.

The MICRO-0.3 is an alternative to Power-One’s traditional string inverters. The device minimises efficiency losses in challenging conditions, because every module benefits from a separate MPPT (maximum power point tracker) to create the optimum power curve for individual panel conditions. Moreover, the micro-inverter allows control of every module individually, ease of plant expansion without the hassle of string resizing or panel matching, and offers efficiency ratings of up to 95,5%.

The redesigned UNO-2.0 and UNO-2.5 single phase inverter is Power-One’s smallest residential inverter, having the right size for the average rooftop installation with 2 kW output (also available with 2,5 kW). This HF-isolated inverter offers new features like a built-in heatsink compartment and a front panel user interface. Moreover, the robust outdoor inverter provides a high-speed MPPT, offering real-time power tracking and improved energy harvesting, a wide input voltage range and efficiency of 96,3%.

The new TRIO-27.6 and TRIO-20.0 string inverter products for large rooftop applications fill the gap between Power-One’s previous 10 kW and 12,5 kW three-phase products and its smallest 50 kW and 55 kW central inverters.

The size, larger than their smaller predecessors, allows the new devices to offer more flexibility and lower wiring cost to installers who have large installations with varying aspects or orientations. Both inverters offer a number of differentiating features, including two independent MPPTs, a built-in heatsink compartment and an efficiency rating of up to 98,3%. The units are free of electrolytic capacitors to further increase life expectancy and long-term reliability.

The new ULTRA-1400 is the largest solar power inverter currently in the Power-One AURORA product range. Designed for large utility-grade installations, this liquid-cooled, high-powered inverter features an IP65 enclosure. Power conversion efficiencies of up to 98,7%, combined with up to four high-speed MPPT channels, optimise energy harvesting across a wide array of operating conditions. This very large inverter system reduces wiring requirements and on-site testing thanks to separate compartments for DC and AC.

To complement the range of inverters, AURORA Vision platform is designed to help customers maximise the return on investment of renewable energy projects through better understanding and communication between the user and the installation.

The platform has three key offerings: software, hardware and accessories. To maximise system energy output while minimising costs, the software includes a full range of system fault management, diagnostics, asset tracking, performance index and alerting services as well as revenue information. The hardware section of AURORA Vision offers equipment designed to capture data and environmental information to allow the transfer between inverter, installation and owner. Accessories such as the desktop monitoring system and the EVO Easy control, which help to monitor the performance of connected inverters over the Internet, complete the portfolio.
